How to read your Commander mana curve

Expensive cards need distinct jobs

Assess the commander separately from the 99

A nominally four-mana commander may function like a five- or six-mana play if casting it without protection is likely to waste the turn.
Casting a commander again from the command zone adds two generic mana for each previous command-zone cast that game. A deck that cannot function without its commander therefore needs to plan for both the first casting and a plausible recast. Why enough mana sources can still produce slow starts

Tapped lands also carry a timing cost. One tapped land may fit neatly into a quiet turn. Deckbuilders sometimes chart ramp, creatures, and engines while treating removal as a separate package. At the table, interaction consumes the same mana and turns as everything else. Its cost therefore changes how smoothly the deck plays.
Cheap interaction gives you more chances to develop while retaining an answer. Expensive interaction may offer broader coverage or additional value, but it can force you to choose between answering a threat and advancing your own board. A balanced package can include both, provided the early options answer the problems your group presents most often.
Also examine timing restrictions and target coverage. A low-cost answer that rarely has a legal or worthwhile target is not reliable early interaction. The useful question is not how many removal spells the list contains, but when they can be cast and what they can stop.
Early card access and late card draw do different jobs
Large refill spells are excellent after you have spent resources. They are poor at rescuing an opening hand that cannot find its next land or required color. Separate cheap card selection and incremental engines from expensive draw that reloads the hand later.
Early card access should help turn a borderline sequence into a functional one. Later draw should keep the deck from exhausting itself. If all the card advantage starts at four or five mana, the deck may look well supplied on paper while repeatedly failing before those spells become castable.
Audit opening hands by turns, not card types
When examining an opening seven, avoid saying only that it has lands, ramp, and action. Describe the first three turns. If that sentence contains several uses of “if,” the hand is probably fragile.

- Does it have the colors required for its first real plays?
- Is the ramp castable with the lands already present?
- What is the realistic commander turn, including colored requirements?
- Can the hand interact if another player develops quickly?
- Can it find another land or spell if the next draw is unhelpful?
- How many cards will remain stranded until the midgame?
Keep hands with a believable sequence and useful branches. Be cautious with hands that become functional only by drawing a particular land, color, or card type immediately.
