Set Booster Era vs Play Booster Era: What Changed for Magic Buyers?

TLDR

Set Boosters are a legacy, opening-focused booster format that debuted with Zendikar Rising in September 2020. Play Boosters were announced on October 16, 2023 and debuted with Murders at Karlov Manor on February 9, 2024. They combined the old Set Booster and Draft Booster roles into one core pack designed for both opening and Limited play. For Draft or Sealed, choose the Play Boosters made for that set. Consider older Set Boosters only when you specifically want to open a product from the Set Booster era. If you need particular cards for a deck, buy singles or test with clearly identified proxies rather than relying on random packs.

The central difference in Set Boosters vs Play Boosters is purpose. Set Boosters made individual pack opening the priority, while Play Boosters retain some of that variability in a structure that can also support Booster Draft and Sealed Deck. That makes Play Boosters more versatile, but it does not mean every Play Booster set has identical slots, pull rates, bonus sheets, or special treatments.

What was a Set Booster?

Wizards introduced Set Boosters with Zendikar Rising, announcing the new product on September 1, 2020 before the set's September release. The company positioned them as an alternative for players who enjoyed opening packs but were not necessarily planning to draft.

A Set Booster contained 12 playable cards, an art card and a token or advertising card. Its collation was built around the opening experience, including connected groups of cards that could create a small visual or mechanical story inside a pack. That approach could make one pack feel curated, but it did not provide the color distribution expected from a conventional Draft Booster.

That distinction matters because randomized cards are not automatically draft-ready. A normal Booster Draft needs packs that provide a workable spread of colors, rarities and card functions across the table. Set Boosters could be opened for cards, used in informal experiments or added to a collection, but they were not the standard product for sanctioned-style Booster Draft.

What changed with Play Boosters?

Wizards announced Play Boosters on October 16, 2023. Murders at Karlov Manor, released worldwide on February 9, 2024, became the first set to use them. The goal was to merge the previous Set Booster and Draft Booster roles into a single core booster that could deliver an interesting opening experience without abandoning Limited play.

The original Play Booster design increased the count from 12 to 14 playable cards and included one additional non-playable slot. Wizards also removed the Set Booster system of connected-card collation so packs would have better color balance for Draft. Its original configuration included a nonfoil wildcard, a guaranteed traditional-foil wildcard and the possibility of one to four rares or mythic rares. Art cards remained possible, but they were no longer guaranteed.

Wizards' original explanation also described a one-in-eight opportunity for a card from The List. Treat that as a historical baseline rather than a promise printed across every later release. The bonus-card program and pack configuration can change, so the official Play Booster explanation is best paired with the collecting article for the particular set on the shelf.

Why the change matters for Draft and Sealed

Play Boosters are the straightforward choice when organizing a Draft or building Sealed pools for a set that uses them. Unlike Set Boosters, their collation was designed with Limited color balance in mind. The extra playable cards also give each pack more material for deck construction than the earlier Set Booster structure.

Play Boosters still create more rare-slot variation than a simple one-rare expectation would suggest. That can affect individual Draft picks and produce occasional packs with several rares or mythics. It does not guarantee that a pool will be strong, valuable or balanced against another pool; randomness remains part of Limited.

For an event, use unopened Play Boosters from the same set and follow that set's event structure. Do not substitute Set Boosters merely because the packs have a similar exterior size. A casual group can invent any draft format it enjoys, but drafting Set Boosters is a custom experiment rather than the product's intended use.

What changed for collectors and pack openers?

The Play Booster model preserved some of the surprise that made Set Boosters attractive. Wildcard slots, a guaranteed traditional foil in the original design, potential art cards and the possibility of multiple rares can make a pack less predictable than the old Draft Booster model. At the same time, Play Boosters gave up the guaranteed art card and connected-card arrangement associated with Set Boosters.

For collectors, this is not a simple upgrade or downgrade. An older Set Booster may be more appealing if you enjoy guaranteed art cards or want to open a particular release from that era. A Play Booster is more flexible because unopened packs can also become a Draft or Sealed event. Neither format is automatically the better financial purchase because the result depends on the set, pack price, desired cards and random contents.

If premium variants are the actual goal, compare the relevant set's Collector Booster with its Play Booster. Do not assume that the same treatment appears at the same frequency in both products. For example, Wizards published a dedicated Murders at Karlov Manor collecting guide explaining that release's exact contents. Equivalent set-specific guidance is more useful than applying its slot breakdown to every later set.

Which booster should you buy?

For Booster Draft or Sealed

Buy Play Boosters for an applicable modern set. They are the product designed to handle both Limited play and ordinary pack opening. Confirm the required pack quantity and any set-specific event rules before buying a box for a group.

For opening an older set

A Set Booster can make sense when the desired release came from the Set Booster era and the opening experience itself is the attraction. Check the pack label carefully because an older set may have Set Boosters, Draft Boosters and Collector Boosters with different purposes. Compare the actual asking price rather than assuming an out-of-production configuration offers better value.

For collecting art cards or special treatments

Older Set Boosters provide the clearer choice when a guaranteed art card is important. With Play Boosters, art cards may appear but are not guaranteed under the original design. For showcase frames, extended art, special foils or other treatments, read the set's official collecting guide and compare its Play and Collector Booster configurations.

For finding exact Commander cards

Random boosters are a poor precision tool. If a Commander list needs one particular land, removal spell or legendary creature, buying that single directly avoids paying for unrelated cards. If you are still deciding whether the card deserves a slot, test the Magic deck before buying cards.

Casual groups can also use clearly identified playtest cards with everyone's agreement. You can make them at home using a practical MTG proxy and playtest-card workflow or consider custom MTG proxy cards when you want printed stand-ins. Keep proxies distinguishable from authentic cards and follow the rules of the store, event or playgroup where the deck will be used.

Common questions about Set and Play Boosters

Are Set Boosters discontinued?

Set Boosters are no longer the continuing core booster model for applicable newer releases. Play Boosters replaced the Set Booster and Draft Booster split beginning with Murders at Karlov Manor. Older sealed Set Boosters may still be encountered, but they belong to the earlier product structure rather than the current model.

Can you draft Set Boosters?

You can invent a casual format with almost any unopened packs, but Set Boosters were not collated for conventional Booster Draft. Their connected-card arrangement could produce uneven color distribution. Use the Draft Boosters from that older release for its intended draft experience.

Can you draft Play Boosters?

Yes. Supporting Booster Draft and Sealed is one of their defining purposes. Play Boosters removed the opening-focused connected collation and increased the number of playable cards relative to Set Boosters to make Limited use practical.

How many cards are in each pack?

A Set Booster had 12 playable cards, plus an art card and a token or advertising card. Wizards' original Play Booster structure had 14 playable cards and one non-playable slot. Packaging and set-specific collecting information should be treated as authoritative for the exact product being purchased.

Do all Play Boosters have identical contents?

No. The original structure explains the product's general purpose, but individual sets can handle bonus sheets, Special Guests, lands, art cards and treatments differently. Check the official product page or collecting article instead of carrying one set's odds into another.

The practical verdict

The Set Booster era separated opening packs from drafting: Set Boosters served the opener, while Draft Boosters served the Limited table. The Play Booster era puts those jobs back into one core pack for applicable releases.

Choose Play Boosters when you want to draft, play Sealed or retain the option to turn unopened packs into an event. Choose legacy Set Boosters only for a specific older release or because their guaranteed art cards and opening-focused structure appeal to you. When you need exact deck pieces, skip the booster lottery and move directly to singles or clearly marked playtest cards.
